In 2010 I started doing the Passion Play Guitar Cantata at various churches.
The concert is separated into 9 acts. Short Bible passages will be read followed by the songs for each act. Each act moves right into the next. The concert has the feel of a musical play.
The songs will be traditional hymns played instrumentally and original vocal songs. The original songs I have written are based on Bible passages from the New King James Version and the New International Version.
The scripture readings are taken from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. All scriptures that are read are from the New International Version of the Bible.
The events of this presentation follow the life of Jesus Christ from Palm Sunday through Easter. The order of the program is taken in the same sequence as the events are found in the gospels of Matthew and Mark.
It is hard to cover all the events that happened in a 40 minute program. I tried to concentrate on the events that would be the most meaningful. My hope is that this presentation will bring people closer to the true meaning of Easter and of the sacrifice of love Jesus gave when He died on the cross.
THE PASSION PLAY - GUITAR CANTATA - 2011 - BY KEITH ANDREW GRIM
ACT 1 - THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY - MARK 11: 7-10
SONG MEDLEY: THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY / ALL GLORY LAUD AND HONOR - (INSTRUMENTAL) / HOSANNA - (VOCAL - COMPOSER KEITH ANDREW GRIM COPYRIGHT 1/7/11)
They brought the colt to Jesus For Him to ride into Jerusalem
They spread their coats on the road For Him to ride into Jerusalem
Some spread palm branches On the dusty road
And those who went ahead And those who followed
Cried out saying:
Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest
Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!
ACT 2. THE PLOT -MATTHEW 26 : 2 -5
SONG MEDLEY: THE PLOT - (VOCAL - COMPOSER KEITH ANDREW GRIM COPYRIGHT JANUARY 7, 2011) / WHAT WONDROUS LOVE IS THIS (INSTRUMENTAL)
SPEAKING: Jesus said to His disciples:
After two days will be the Passover
And the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified
The chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders,
Met at the palace, of the high priest, Caiaphas
And they plotted how to trick Jesus
And they plotted how to kill Jesus
But not during the feast
For they feared there would be an uproar among the followers of Jesus
ACT 3. THE ANOINTING - MARK 14: 3, 4
SPEAKING: While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another,
SONG MEDLEY: THE ANOINTING (VOCAL - COMPOSER KEITH ANDREW GRIM - COPYRIGHT 1/3/11) / I AM THINE O LORD (INSTRUMENTAL)
The money could have been given to the poor, should’ve sold the costly oil.
It flows from His head all the way to the floor, Why waste the costly oil
The money could be given to those in need
Think of all the hungry mouths we could feed,
When Jesus was made aware of it, He said
“Why do you trouble the woman? She has done a good thing for Me
You will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have Me
She has done a good thing for Me, She has done a good thing for Me.
In pouring this oil on My Body she prepared Me for My burial
Wherever the Gospel is now preached this act will be her memorial
She has done a good thing for Me, she has done a good thing for Me!"
ACT 4. THE UPPER ROOM - MARK 14: 18 - 19
SPEAKING: The Disciples prepared the Passover, While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.” They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?
SONG MEDLEY: HE BROKE THE BREAD - (VOCAL - COMPOSER KEITH ANDREW GRIM COPYRIGHT 3/1/1996 AND 1/7/2011) O SACRED HEAD NOW WOUNDED (INSTRUMENTAL)
1. That night he broke the bread with them, The ones He called His dearest friends
That night He drank the wine with them, The faithful ones through thick and thin
But one would betray the trust of the Holy Lord,
What a fateful day, Jesus our Lord deserved more,
Better if the betrayer had never been born.
2. That night He broke the bread with them, “Take this and eat, this is my Body”
That night He drank the wine with them, “This is My blood of the covenant.”
Which is poured out for the souls of many
I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine,
Until that day I drink anew in the Kingdom of God.
3. That night they sang a Holy hymn, a song of praise to God their King
That night they would fall away from Him, The ones He called His dearest friends
Christ in anguish prayed for this cup to go away, His Spirit was not still but He did His Father’s will
Jesus Christ our Holy Lord, God’s faithful Son!
ACT 5. THE PRAYER - MARK 14:32 - 34
SPEAKING: They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
SONG MEDLEY: THE PRAYER - (VOCAL - COMPOSER - KEITH ANDREW GRIM - COPYRIGHT 1/7/11) / THERE IS A REDEEMER (INSTRUMENTAL - COMPOSER - MELODY GREEN - COPYRIGHT 1982)
1. Abba, Father...Everything is possible for You!
Take this cup, From Me, Not as I will but as You do.
He returned, found asleep, all of His disciples
“Could you not, one hour keep, watch and pray you don’t fall!
Watch now and pray don’t fall asleep
The spirit is willing but the body is weak!
2. Three times, He prayed, for this cup to go away.
An angel, strengthened Him, appearing from heaven above.
And His sweat, like drops of blood, Fell down to the ground
From His, earnest prayer, He was in anguish now
Watch now and pray don’t fall asleep
The spirit is willing but the body is weak.
ACT 6: THE BETRAYAL LUKE 22:47-48
SONG MEDLEY: THE BETRAYAL (INSTRUMENTAL - COMPOSER KEITH ANDREW GRIM COPYRIGHT 2010)/ LAMB OF GOD (INSTRUMENTAL - COMPOSER TWILA PARIS - COPYRIGHT 1985)
While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
ACT 7. THE WAY OF SUFFERING - MARK 15: 11 - 13, MATTHEW 27:31
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.“Crucify him!” they shouted. Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
....After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
SONG: VIA DOLOROSA - (VOCAL - COMPOSERS - BILLY SPRAGUE AND NILES BOROP, COPYRIGHT 1983 MEADOWGREEN MUSIC CO. / WORD MUSIC) (a div of Word, Inc)
Down the Vía Dolorosa in Jerusalem that day
The soldiers tried to clear the narrow street
But the crowd pressed in to see
The Man condemned to die on Calvary
He was bleeding from a beating, there were stripes upon His back
And He wore a crown of thorns upon His head
And He bore with every step
The scorn of those who cried out for His death
Down the Vía Dolorosa called the way of suffering
Like a lamb came the Messiah, Christ the King,
But He chose to walk that road out of
His love for you and me.
Down the Via Dolorosa, all the way to Calvary.
The blood that would cleanse the souls of all men
Made its way through the heart of Jerusalem.
ACT 8 JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS - LUKE 23: 44 - 46
SPEAKING: It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.
SONG MEDLEY: Father Into Your Hands - (VOCAL-Composer Keith Andrew Grim 2011) -WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS - (INSTRUMENTAL - Text: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Music: Lowell Mason, 1792-1872) / NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS - (VOCAL COMPOSER - ROBERT LOWRY)
1. What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Refrain:
O precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow;
no other fount I know;
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
ACT 9 THE RESURRECTION - LUKE 24: 1- 6a
SPEAKING: On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead He is not here; he has risen!
SONG MEDLEY: CHRIST AROSE (INSTRUMENTAL) / CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY (INSTRUMENTAL) / THE LORD OF LORDS IS RISEN TODAY - (VOCAL - COMPOSER KEITH ANDREW GRIM - COPYRIGHT 2003)
THE LORD OF LORDS IS RISEN TODAY

THE LORD OF LORDS IS RISEN TODAY, Hallelujah let the angels say

For the Lord of lords is risen today, risen today.

From the rising from the grave, Jesus the Messiah came to save,
Jesus the Messiah, Jesus the Messiah came to save
CHORUS: The Lord of lords is risen today, Alleluia let the angels say
He's not here for He's alive, Don't shed a tear, now don't you cry
The Lord of lords is risen today!
VERSE 2: For God so loved the world He gave His only Son, He’s the sacrifice Lamb for everyone.
And for all those who believe, Jesus the Messiah will receive,
Jesus the Messiah, Jesus the Messiah will receive.
CHORUS: The Lord of lords Is Risen today, Hallelujah let the angels say
He’s not here, for He’s alive, Don’t shed a tear, now don’t you cry,
For the Lord of lords is risen today, risen today.
